Who
Are the Real Terrorists?
An
Interview with Wolf Larsen
from the book Capitalism Sucks
Question:
So what do you think should be done about terrorism?
Answer:
Well, this depends on how you define terrorism and who the real terrorists
are. I would argue that if a police
officer shoots an innocent black man to death that that is terrorism. I would argue that if the American war
machine drops a bomb on a family having dinner in Afghanistan or Pakistan that
that is terrorism. I would argue that
what the American government did to the people of Vietnam was large-scale
terrorism. I would argue that what the
Israeli military is doing to the Palestinian people is terrorism. And I certainly condemn terrorism.
Q.
But what about the terrorists who strap a bomb to their body and then explode
their bomb and kill themselves and innocent civilians and soldiers?
A. I condemn the killing of innocent
civilians. As far as I'm concerned
terrorism is defined by the killing of innocent civilians. If someone straps a bomb to his body and
kills innocent civilians than that person is a despicable terrorist. If the President of the United States of
America orders bombs to be dropped on a foreign country than the American President
is a terrorist. Terrorists are
despicable. Someone who kills foreign
soldiers occupying his country is not a terrorist however. There is a difference between killing
innocent civilians and killing foreign soldiers that are occupying your
country. Remember, during the American
Revolutionary war we fought the Redcoats.
The Redcoats were a foreign army on our soil. When we killed the Redcoats we were not
terrorists, because we were shooting at foreign soldiers on our soil. Therefore, persons in whatever country that
kill foreign soldiers occupying their land are not terrorists. Terrorists are people that kill innocent
civilians. The United States government
kills more innocent civilians in its various wars than any other terrorist on
the planet. Therefore, the United States
government is the biggest terrorist on the planet.
Q.
You call the American government the biggest terrorist on the planet. But the American government says that it is
involved in a war against terrorism.
That's kind of ironic.
A. Yes it is.
It's very ironic that the biggest terrorist in the world – which is the
American government – says that it is in a war against terrorism. The United States is not in a war against
terrorism. The United States says that
it is in a war against terrorism, but that is a lie. The United States uses rhetoric about terrorism
as a pretext to go to war in Iraq because Iraq has huge oil reserves. The US government was interested in Iraq's
oil reserves, the war in Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism. The United States government said it went to
war in Afghanistan to fight terrorism, but ironically the biggest terrorist in Afghanistan
is the United States government. The
United States war machine has killed countless innocent civilians in
Afghanistan, as well as in neighboring Pakistan.
Q.
But didn't the United States government have to fight in Afghanistan to punish
the terrorists for the 9/11 attacks?
A. There appear to be many unanswered questions
about the 9/11 attacks, and there are many who believe that 9/11 was an inside
job. But regardless of whether 9/11 was
an inside job or not I think it's obvious that the US government looks for
various excuses to make all these constant wars all the time. The US government used the whole 9/11
incident as an excuse to go to war. It's
tragic that all those people died in 9/11.
It's also tragic that so many have died in the wars in Afghanistan and
Pakistan. It is also a disgusting shame
that the politicians of both parties used 9/11 to eliminate many of our civil
liberties with a vile piece of legislation called the Patriot Act.
Q.
But wasn't the Patriot Act necessary to protect the American people from
terrorism?
A. And who's going to protect us from the
biggest terrorist in the world – which is the United States government. The cops shooting innocent black men to death
in the streets – now that's terrorism.
And the same police that are shooting innocent black men are the same
police that are breaking the strikes of working-class people and escorting the
scabs into the workplaces to take their jobs.
These same police protect the interests of the landlords and the banks
and help to evict people who fall behind on their mortgages and rent. Evicting people out in the streets and into
the cold – now that's a form of terrorism.
Think of the terror of a middle-aged person who has lost her job and
can't find another and is worried that she will never be employed again. Don't you think that person is
terrified? And what of the terror of the
dozen black activists and their children of the MOVE organization in
Philadelphia in may 1985 when they were murdered by the police on orders of
Wilson Goode – what about their terror?
What about the terror of the people who lived in Waco Texas who were
murdered by the police forces gathered around their compound? What about their terror? Terrorism is wrong! And the biggest terrorist in the world can be
found in Washington, DC. Terrorists wear
police uniforms here in America. Here in
America the CEOs of large corporations are engaged in a kind of economic
terrorism against working-class Americans – eliminating jobs and throwing
Americans out of their homes. So we have
to be clear who the worst terrorists are.
And yes I certainly condemn terrorism.
