Watch
out for Right-Wing Populist Movements
An
Interview with Wolf Larsen
from the book Capitalism Sucks!
Question:
So what are right-wing populist movements?
Answer:
Right-wing populist movements are usually led by charismatic figures who
receive large donations from the wealthy.
These charismatic figures manipulate the frustrations of middle-class
people, of working people, and of poor people into mass movements that are or
become right-wing and reactionary in nature.
Q.
What are the dangers of right-wing Populist movements?
A. Anti-Semitism is one of them. Instead of labeling the bourgeoisie as the
perpetrators of endless crimes against the working class and humanity these
movements sometimes falsely identify the Jews as being the cause of all the
problems in any given society. Some of
these right-wing populist movements seek to use Jews or other groups – such as
immigrants or gays or minorities – as scapegoats for a society's problems. Of course, in reality it is the bourgeoisie
who control any given capitalist country, and it is therefore the bourgeoisie who
are responsible for the suffering of the vast majority of people in any given
country. But the bourgeoisie seek to put
the blame for the problems that capitalism causes on the heads of others. And as I said before these movements are
often financed by multimillionaires. The
goal of the bourgeoisie is to continue their rule over the workers. They will do so in any manner of different
forms, whether it be a bourgeois "welfare state" democracy, or
dictatorship, and at times even fascism.
A bourgeois government can take many different forms, the main thing the
bourgeoisie are concerned about is staying in power and keeping their wealth. One of the means that the bourgeoisie utilize
to stay in power is confusing the working people, the unemployed, and the other
discontents under capitalism with right-wing populism. Sometimes right-wing populism utilizes
religion to confuse the workers. Often
times the religious message being spread by these right-wing populists has
nothing to do with Jesus Christ or the New Testament or any of that. You only need to read the New Testament in
its entirety to realize that many preachers, priests, and right-wing populists
pollute the message of Jesus Christ in order to further their own political
ends. Not that I'm religious, I'm not. I'm an atheist. But it's absolutely disgusting to see how
these right-wing populists often utilize religion in order to blind the working
people and mislead them. These
right-wing populists cynically use religion to further their own personal
ambitions and reactionary political agenda.
Q.
So right-wing populism can take a variety of forms. What about left-wing populism?
A. Left-wing populism in some ways is similar to
right-wing populism. In other ways it is
not. Sometimes it's difficult to tell
whether a populist demagogue is right-wing or left-wing or some combination of
both. One of the main dangers of
left-wing populism is that if the movement or the leader of the movement
fosters illusions in the bourgeoisie or in the capitalist system these
illusions may in the end cost many of the workers their lives, like what
happened in Chile in 1973. Some "left"-wing
leaders may be very charismatic and may win over many workers. However, the workers should not allow
themselves to be fooled by charisma and great speechmaking. Great speeches and propaganda in the service
of proletarian revolution is good, but great speeches that foster illusions in
the capitalist system and the bourgeoisie is not. Only a proletarian revolution will bring down
the bourgeois state. Only a workers
state will have the power to stop the bourgeoisie and their henchmen from
drowning the workers in blood. Only a
workers party – one similar to the Bolshevik party of Lenin and Trotsky – can
lead the workers to revolution. It is
foolhardy to follow a left-wing Populist who preaches illusions in the
capitalist system or some "progressive" wing of the bourgeoisie.
