So What If the Next President Of The United States Is Black?

An Interview with Wolf Larsen

Question: A black man is the Democratic nominee for President.  What will change if anything if a black man becomes President of the most powerful nation on earth?

Answer: Nothing.  Absolutely nothing.

Q. Why do you say that?

A.  Black politicians are pretty much the same as white politicians – that is black politicians keep black people and everybody else down just like white politicians.

Q. But don't you think this will be an uplifting experience for black people?  To have a black President – isn't that something?

A.  No it's not.  There are many black people that accomplish great things – but black politicians are not one of them.  Black musicians, black artists, black leaders like Frederick Douglass, black inventors like that guy that invented the traffic light – where would we be without the traffic light?  These are black people that have accomplished great things.  On the other hand black politicians, like white politicians, accomplish nothing!  The word politician might as well be a four letter word.  (Laughs)

Q. But what about the pride that many black people will feel if there is a black President?

A.  And maybe that pride will turn into disgust and disillusionment once the majority of black people realize that having a black President changes nothing.  If the black majority continue to be treated like an underclass – if the black majority continues to be treated like a color cast as if we're in India or something – than what difference does it make what color the President is?  If the black elite joins the white elite in oppressing working-class people both white and black I fail to see how that improves conditions for the black worker.

Q. Do you think that the election of a black President will cause or rather increase tensions in the black community along economic lines?

A. It might.  At first, the election of a black President will unite the black community.  But once the black majority who are suffering economically realize that changing the color of the President changes little else than the black majority is going to get mad and frustrated – and for good reason!  The black nationalists, who no doubt are pushing a black President very hard in the black community, will lose clout and credibility.  What both black workers and white workers need to do is forget about the Democrats and the Republicans.  We need our own party – a workers party!

Q.  But don't you think the Democratic nominee deserves a chance?  You're already condemning him, and he hasn't even been President yet!

A.  No capitalist politician either Democrat or Republican deserves a chance!  These politicians, both black and white, Democrat and Republican, have gotten us into two wars at the same time, have given the rich endless tax breaks while the rest of us pay and pay endless taxes to support a huge war machine.  Huge numbers of black people are behind prison bars for no other reason than drugs, and yet black people aren't any more likely to use drugs than white people.  Two million Americans behind prison bars every night is just too much!  We are living in a democracy in name only, it is a democracy of the rich and powerful, and the rest of us are being left out.

Q. But the fact that black people are so badly treated in this country – isn't that the reason why we need a black president?

A.  The fact that black people have been so brutally oppressed for 400 years is the reason why we need a workers revolution.  We live under a government that was founded by slaveholders and slave traders.  Black people – or most black people excluding the black elite – will never be free as long as they live under a system founded by slaveholders and slave traders.  Having a black face in a high place will change nothing for the black majority.  Most black people will continue to be disproportionately poor, will continue to be incarcerated in disproportionately high rates just for being black.  When Chicago had its first black mayor I remember when a couple of white cops beat up a black female bus driver with impunity.  While Chicago had its first black mayor white cops beat up black men in police stations all the time!  While Chicago had its first black mayor black people became poorer.

Q. But that's not the fault of the mayor.  It would have been the same if the mayor had been white – right?

A. Yes.  And that's exactly my point!  Having black faces in high places changes nothing.  The system we are living under is inherently racist.  The only solution is to get rid of the racist capitalist system.  We need a workers revolution.
